Do your student project on the future of women's health

For students in nanotechnology, applied physics, biomedicine, biotechnology or related areas who want their master's thesis, bachelor project or project course to count, scientifically and for gender equality.

Background

Hormones shape metabolism, fertility, mood and sleep, yet they are rarely measured, and then mostly by occasional blood tests in a clinic. In the Hormones Project, funded by KTH InspireLab, we are developing an affordable, home-based optical system that measures hormones in urine, every day. The goal is earlier diagnosis, better understanding of women's health across all life stages, and data that can help close the gender gap in biomedical research. Read more about the project →

The project brings together photonics and biotechnology, and there is room for students from both. Projects are shaped together with you, based on your background, your interests and where the project is when you start.

Where you can contribute

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an interest in gender equality and technology to do their master's thesis, bachelor project or project course within our InspireLab project. Projects can be experimental or AI-based, at SciLifeLab or at AlbaNova.

Applied physics

Projects on the physical side of the measurement: optical detection and spectroscopy, light sources, and the design, materials and microfabrication of the sample container. Work is typically experimental, often combined with simulation and modelling. Mainly at KTH AlbaNova, Department of Applied Physics.

Biomedicine and biotechnology

Projects on the biological side: hormones and their metabolites in urine, sample preparation and characterisation, and validation against established laboratory methods. Mainly at SciLifeLab, Department of Protein Science.

A project with us typically includes

  • a literature study in your area
  • experimental, computational or modelling work, depending on the project
  • close collaboration with PhD students and researchers from other disciplines
  • presenting your results to the team

Requirement

Awareness of gender equality (jämställdhet) issues, and an understanding of what this project is trying to solve in that respect: that women's health has been under-measured, under-researched and too often dismissed, and that better technology is part of the answer.

Beyond that, we look for curiosity and a willingness to learn from people trained in other disciplines. Inclusion and shared leadership are our starting point, not our goal, and you will be part of a team where questions are welcome.
